Who we are

Welcome to Norwich Synagogue

We look forward to welcoming you to our Synagogue, the only purpose-built Synagogue in Norfolk or Suffolk.

We have an active Congregation with a resident Minister. We hold regular religious services, educational activities and cultural events. Our lovely building was consecrated in 1969 following the destruction of our Victorian Synagogue in 1942.

A fuller history of the community can be found on this website.

We recently celebrated Purim followed by Passover with good attendance of members and friends. The synagogue AGM was held on Sunday 12th May.

Contact [email protected] if you’d like to read about these events in detail in the Synagogue newsletter.

Services are held regularly each Shabbat morning at 10 am; mostly these are traditional, led by our Minister, and use the siddur updated by the late Rabbi Lord Sacks. We have men’s seating, women’s seating and mixed seating areas. On the first Shabbat of each month we instead hold an Egalitarian service (Kehilat Meir), run by members. Following all services, a Kiddush is served in the communal hall. We have occasional Friday evening services and a Bring and Share supper. Visitors are very much welcomed at our services, although we do ask for notification of your visit, as, in common with other Synagogues, we run a security check.

All festivals are celebrated, sometimes with meals, and there is a communal Seder each year. A cheder for the children is also held normally fortnightly.

We invite you to have a look around our website and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us and we would be delighted to help.
