As we celebrate Britain’s great achievements following the recent Rio Olympics, we begin to look inwardly taking stock of our own achievements during the past year. To this end, we can surely be proud. We are blessed within our community with dedicated members who excel in so many different ways. Rosh Hasha-nah and Yom Kippur is in part an occasion to celebrate. It is a time when we say thank you to the almighty God for blessing us with the most precious gift of all, namely with life itself. We live in a secular environment in which the life style we live, and the Moral standards we adopt, are determined by the market. The market gives us choices, and morality is often reduced to a set of choices in which right or wrong have no meaning beyond the satisfaction or frustration of desire.
On Rosh Hashanah we ask ourselves the three big questions that every reflective human being must ask themselves at some time. Who am I? Why am I here? How then shall I live my life? Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our life, our purpose, and our identity. It is our ability to communicate with God and thereby strengthen the relationship with a force greater than ourselves. As we enter the High Holiday period, we ask God to remember us for life, and write us in the book of life. Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, and peaceful New Year. Shana Tova.
