FROM THE BIMAH by Alex Bennett
It is not very often that our Shabbat Services are interrupted by snow, but we have already felt the effects of what seems to be an exceptionally cold winter. And although this sort of thing does not seem to have hindered the progress of the Israelites in the wilderness, nevertheless it could have occurred. Indeed, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam reads, “ Like snow upon the desert’s dusty face, lighting a little hour or two - is gone.” Would that the snow didn’t linger here in England! I dislike the breaks in our Torah readings caused by the weather, especially as we are currently progressing through a series of exceptional happenings as we read about the Ten Plagues soon to be followed by the Ten Commandments.
Scattered as we are around Norfolk, and even into Suffolk, it is wonderful how we manage to achieve a Minyan almost every week.
So all we can do is to look forward to Spring which will be heralded by Purim and Pesach. Meanwhile we hope that our Shul heating system will be able to cope and that the current cold spell will soon be over.
