COMMUNITY

The Council of Christians and Jews

The Council of Christians and Jews is Britain's oldest national inter-faith organisation. It was established in 1942 to (1) promote religious and cultural understanding between Christians and Jews (2), to work for the elimination of religious and racial prejudice, hatred and discrimination, particularly antisemitism and (3), to promote religious and racial harmony on the basis of ethical and social teachings common to Christianity and Judaism. The CCJ is organised into a series of local branches and the Norwich Hebrew Congregation is pleased to be an active supported of the Norfolk branch who together arrange talks, services and quizzes and other events throughout the year including the extremely successful and well attended Holocaust Day Memorial Service which is held annually in late January at the church of St. Peter Mancroft in Norwich. For further information on upcoming events please see below or visit www.ccj.org.uk.

Novembers CCJ Meetings

The Norwich CCJ goes from strength to strength. Their festive evening held in December was a brilliant evening, very well supported by our Jewish community and other members of the CCJ. They were entertained by the Moriah Klezmer Band. The Band, based broadly on traditional Jewish 'klezmer', their music is an eclectic mix of jazz, folk and funk. The 7 piece band includes 6 members of the upper 6 at Norwich School. The band emerged organically from jam sessions during music lessons; these Hebrew enthusiasts (although none are Jewish) brewed up their own distinctive genre with its 'cross-cultural' appeal and driving dance rhythms. Their music together with some puzzle games plus a mix of traditional food made an excellent evening.
