Social Activities There are three organisations within the synagogue which provide opportunities for meeting socially. NORWICH ISRAEL & SOCIAL SOCIETY (NISS) This society has been in existence for nearly 50 years and was formed to provide social activities for members and in so doing helped to raise money for a newly founded and growing Israel. In the new state’s early years it helped to provide agricultural implements for Deganya, an early kibbutz which the society adopted. In recent years it has continued to give money to Israeli charities, in particular to the emergency services and hospitals. It holds social events, such as an annual garden party, talks, dinners and quizzes etc. during the year to which members and friends are always welcomed. NORWICH JEWISH LADIES SOCIETY (NJLS) This society too has been in existence for over 100 years, and has a long and worthwhile history. The ladies meet each month and enjoy listening to a variety of speakers, having outings from time to time or just enjoy a chat. They keep in touch with members who are sick or elderly and give help where possible. They work with the Norwich Israel and Social Society on social and fund raising functions. OVER 65s LUNCHEON CLUB This club meets once a month in the synagogue hall to have lunch and enjoy each other’s company. The congregation has links with the Norfolk branch of the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) and has provided Chairmen for the Society in recent years. The CCJ meets four times a year at different venues around the city of Norwich, and the synagogue also hosts meetings about once a year. HERITAGE In 2005 for the first time, the Synagogue opened its doors to the public on the City of Norwich Heritage Days and hopes to make this a regular event.
