Victor Joseph Bishop 1921 – 2004

The Norwich Hebrew Congregation mourned the passing of Victor Bishop, Vice President, and former President, Treasurer and for many years representative to the Board of Deputies, who died on Thursday, 8th January 2004, aged 83.

He was born and brought up in Great Yarmouth but moved to Norwich where he became one of that select group of Norfolk-born Jews distinct from the majority of us who have migrated here. He served for many decades on the Synagogue committee. It is no exaggeration to say that he was one of the staunchest pillars of the Congregation and we shall be hard put to replace him with anyone so devoted, so far seeing, so influential among our community and so well known and respected within the City of Norwich.

Victor served in Italy and Austria during the Second World War and spent his working life in the toy industry. He was also a Freemason amongst whose ranks he was widely respected. He had a wicked sense of humour and a shrewd understanding of the way the world worked.
