Erev Rosh Hashanah 2017

We have held an Erev Rosh Hashanah dinner following the first service of the High Holy Day season in previous years but this year was very different as we celebrated the commencement by have a ROSH HASHANAH SEDER, ably led by Rabbi Roderick Young.

The RH Seder is a Sephardi traditions and one we were all keen to embrace as over 30 of us sat down to a very lovely dinner prepared by Marian, Poppy and Maureen.

The seder plate consist of nine different foods over which special blessing are recited in turn and after which they are eaten.  The foods were: figs, squash, fennel, leeks, chard, dates, pomegranates and a fish head.  The seder originally called for a fish or sheep’s head to symbolize our wish to be heads, not tails; leaders, not stragglers. The head serves as a reminder of the ram that saved Isaac’s life, we recite the story of the binding of Isaac on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. We did not eat the fish head!

The Seder was a resounding success with over 30 members and visitors sitting down to enjoy the ceremony, food and a lovely festive atmoshpere.
